When family concerns scare you healthy

I don't know why I feel like talking about this today, but it's weighing on my mind. Have you ever watched a family member slowly decline in health and think about what this could mean for you in the future?

My father...is dying.

It's hard to say that without getting a lump in my throat, but it's true. He's got congestive heart failure. Here I am, an editor at a great health supplement company, surrounded by things that can improve and even save lives, and I feel helpless to help the one person that needs it the most.

The other day I was at the mall, grabbing a quick lunch. I saw two people ordering the most unhealthy lunch you could imagine. I looked down at my own lunch and wasn't too impressed with my own choice, either. I couldn't eat it. I realized that everyday choices like a simple lunch could literally mean years added -- or subtracted -- from my life. You have one heart. Once it's sick, there may not be anything you can do to fix it.

I take Omega-3's now. I can share part of an article I wrote on Omega-3's and why they're good for your heart if you like:

Omega-3 fatty acids may have been medically proven to:

• reduce heart disease
• decrease blood clots
• prevent cancer
• lessen risk of dementia (e.g.: Alzheimer’s disease)
• reduce symptoms of depression
• reduce symptoms of ADD and ADHD

One of the best sources for Omega 3 is fish oils. Dietary guidelines, long recommended by the American Heart Association, urge adults to eat a minimum of two servings of fish per week … fish including salmon, Albacore tuna, mackerel, herring and sardines. If cooking fish is a bother, you can always find fish oil supplements to add to your diet.

My heart is breaking today, realizing how sick my dad is. He has his good days and his bad. Mostly good, to be honest. But his heart..is..sick. Sometimes you have to look at your lunch plate and look around you and ask yourself - am I doing what I can for my heart?

Introducing your Editor and friend, Marie

Hi everyone! My name is Marie Gillespie and I'm an editor with Ardis Health. I thought I would come out and introduce myself to everyone. Here's the deal...I work for a health and wellness company and yet I haven't been taking care of myself. It's just a pattern I've got myself into, with fast food, skipping meals, and snacking like mad. I guess it all boils down to time management, or better yet, lifestyle management. I'm in my late 30's and time is going by fast! It's time to quit yo-yo dieting and quit saying that I'm going to live healthy and to actually do it consistently - and mean it!

I am going to share my life with you as I get started investigating what it takes to reclaim my health, one day at a time.

I hope you join me. You can leave comments and responses to my blog here and I'll talk with you. Let's get to know each other!

Marie
