Pre-Diabetes - Do you know what it is?

Now that the kids are back in school and returned to studying the three “R’s” of readin’, ‘riting and ‘rithmatic, it’s time that you should join them in doing some homework … specifically if you are over 40 and inactive.
Your first assignment is to test yourself for pre-diabetes … this is a precursor to Type 2 diabetes where individuals will have increased blood glucose levels; however, those levels are still at a moderate point. Don’t worry!
This pop quiz isn’t long and you need only provide honest answers to the questions. Just double-click on the website link below to access the test:

So, what were your results? If you did receive a low grade, you are among the 54 million Americans afflicted with this condition; you are assigned some additional homework – these are the recommended treatments for those with pre-diabetes:

Exercise: You don’t need to slim down much … just lose 5 – 10 percent of your total body fat to improve your health. A simple walking regimen of 30 minutes per day and five days per week can be very beneficial.

Choose your food wisely: Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, dried beans, fish and lean meats are all recommended. In addition, stock your grocery cart with skim milk and liquid cooking oils. Those middle aisles in your grocery store – with the sugar-laden pops and high-calorie cookies - will become your enemy!

The best move overall is to consult with your doctor for a proper diagnosis. For the moment, school is now dismissed; however, completing homework and studying for tests while you are learning always gets you better marks.
