Health News: Vitamins Relieve Depression Symptoms
Ever had one of those days? You’re tired, lackadaisical and somewhat unhappy? This may just be a passing thing; however, it may also easily be the sign of something far more serious – depression. 2005 statistics report that a staggering number of American adults – approximately 18.8 million or 9.5% of the country’s total population – suffer from depression or a related condition each year. Chances are high that, if you don’t suffer from depression yourself, you will know someone who does. Now, you can fight back against depression. How? By using vitamins and minerals!
Vitamin B6 and B12: In 1991, researchers analyzed 20 geriatric and 16 young nonalcoholic patients suffering from depression, prior to facility testing. 28% of these patients were deficient in riboflavin, Vitamin B6 and B12. The connection seems clear.
Thiamin: A more recent study, from 1997, involved 120 young women who each received 50 mg of thiamin daily for two months. Results reported the participants could think clearer, were calmer and had considerably more energy.
Niacin: A lack of niacin in your body’s system has been shown to contribute to depression, anxiety, insomnia and dementia.
An additional supplement, bio-nutrient® Mood Support, will also enhance your body and spirit. The major ingredient in bio-nutrient® Mood Support, St. John’s Wort is an all-natural herbal treatment, which has been scientifically proven as an effective depression fighter. American and German scientists joined forces in 1996 to test over 1700 individuals all suffering from depression at some level. Following the study, 55% of the group given St. John’s Wort was pleased to report that they felt better overall.

I am so happy to read this article because I have recently had to "wean" off all of my antidepressant medications. I have at present a really nasty infection and have to take very high doses of antibiotics and probably for a very long time (at least six months). Point being that the mix of most antibiotics with antidepressants cause some dangerous side effects in particular with the antidepressants that are seritonin re-uptake inhibitors. I notice a huge difference in how I feel without the antidepressants, everything from levels of pain to overall affect and feeling negative. It is difficult to fight those feelings without some type of help so if I can get even a little assistance from vitamins and/or herbals I'll be very grateful!!! Of course I will double check with my doctor and pharmacists to make sure that these alternatives don't cause the same type problems as the pharmacuitals do and I'll try hard to remember to post here what they say as well. Who knows who it might help!!
Thankx
Lyndie
I tend to have a sort of seasonal depression, not the kind that is worse in spring/fall but more a winter thing, I think it's called Seasonal Affective Depressive Disorder aka SADD and that's quite the appropriate anacronym because that's just how I feel sad. This effects my weight and even my enjoyment of the holiday season. This depression has to do with the shorter and often darker days of winter, something about needing certain rays of the sun more prominent in summer. I like the idea that I can get some help from vitamins and other natural ways instead of having to load up on chemicals. I know that i try hard to go outdoors for a bit on sunny days even if only 10mins, just that little dose of sun is enough to produce vitD for bone strength AND to give some UV rays to decrease the affect of SADD systemically. Whatever helps and is more natural I'll give a try!!
I use supplemental B's to aid with depression (among other things) and I also use a bit of StJohn'sWort and Melissa (lemon grass) supplements in an effort to avoid using pharma's. I've gotten very leary of the drug industry lately because it seems to me that more and more of medications are being recalled due to severe and dangerous side effects showing up. Apparently there's not a long enough or strict enough testing period anymore (prime example is Celebrex) it's just scary to me so if I can find a way to treat my "ills" that may be a tad safer that's the route I'm going to take. I've also noted that when I am feeling less depressed that I have a MUCH easier time controlling my weight and my diet so my advise to anyone that is depressed is DO something about it because it DOES effect every aspect of your life---learn ways to control it, don't let it control you!!
Erectile dysfunction can give depression and vice a versa. Both these situations are highly prevalent among men and the conditions coexist and interact in several ways that remain unclear. http://www.viagrathunder.com
